Losing a job could make divorce more likely

On Behalf of | Oct 15, 2021 | Divorce

If you’re considering the odds of divorce, there are a lot of factors to take into account. How old were you when you got married? Do you have any children? How long have you been together? Did your parents get divorced when you were a child, or did your spouse’s parents get divorced when they were younger?

One more thing to add to this list is job loss. Studies have found that divorce is more likely for someone who has lost their job. The exact percentages vary depending on the type of job loss, and other factors may also contribute, but it is clear that becoming unemployed will increase your odds of also losing your marriage.

Why does this happen?

Money issues are also often linked to divorce. Couples who experience higher levels of financial stress or who disagree on how they should use their money are more likely to split up.

Job loss can clearly create a lot of financial stress. The couple may lose their home and struggle to pay other bills. With less money coming in — even if the other person still works — they may get into more disagreements about how to use what they have. Plus, losing a job can also mean spending more time together at home. This is not ideal for all couples, who will see an increase in friction and dissatisfaction with their marriage over time.
